Flawless Foundation Routine

Hey everyone! Most of you know that I don't have perfect skin, but then again who does? I not only don't have perfect skin, but my skin really isn't good at all. It's a big greasy oil ball and I tend to break out a lot. I've tried countless skin care systems, and I think I may have finally found one that works for me, but more on that in it's own post when I'm sure it's my miracle. For now I have to depend on makeup to help even out my skin tone and cover up my blemishes. If you watch my videos, you also probably know that I change up my foundation routine way to much for a sane soul. That being said, I can't remember the last time I was this in love with a foundation routine and have stuck with it for so long. Here's what I do/use...
1) Apply one squirt of Lancome Primer all over face using my fingers, then let set for at least sixty seconds.
2) Put a small amount of Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation on the back of my hand, then use a Mac 131 brush to stipple and blend all over my face and neck. (NOTE: Apply a small amount all over, then focus another layer on any problem areas.)
3) Pat a small amount of Laura Mercier Secret Brightener below my eyes.
4) Smear some Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer under my eyes, around the sides of my nose, and on any problem areas using my fingers.
5) Set my under eye concealer with Laura Mercier Eye Brightening Powder.
6) Using a Mac 134 brush, dust on a layer of Nars Powder Foundation.
7) Finish off with any bronzer, blush, and other makeup of your choice!

Now you might be wondering why the multiple under eye products are necessary. For you, they may not be. However, I have dark under eye circles and find that when you conceal them properly, it makes all the difference! The first Laura Mercier product comes in a pen/tube container with a brush applicator and twist up bottom. It's a shimmery color that reflects light away and, in doing that, brightens up your under eyes. (NOTE: If you have lighter skin, get #1. Darker skin requires #2.) The next product is concealer, which speaks for itself. Now you can set this concealer with your normal powder, or you can do what I do, which is use the brightening powder. The brightening powder is a white/translucent powder with tiny little sparkles. When applied on top of your under eye concealer, it brightens up your entire eye. It's also great for photography, since it will react with the flash from the camera and make your eyes look super radiant.

You may have also noticed that I set my foundation, with another foundation. Mind you, it's a powder foundation, but still a foundation. I used to set the Laura Mercier foundation with a translucent powder, but when I was in LA in June for IMATS, I met an amazing makeup artist named Gabe who told me to set it using the Nars Powder Foundation. I thought this would look cake-y and overdone, but I took his word for it and tried it out. I was amazed by how great the coverage was! I have done this everyday since and I can't imagine switching it out for other products in the near future.

So tell me, what's your every day foundation routine? Have you tried any of these products out, and if so, what'd you think?

-Blair.

First, I apply a daily oil control lotion, then a regular moisturizer. Then, I apply my coastal scents concealer from the camolauge pallete ( or NYC stick concealer). Next, I put on my foundation, Rimmel London stay matte. Then, my powder which is just the sephora brand. Lastly a use a shimmery skin finish under my eyes to brighten. =)

My foundation routine changes depending on how broken out my face is. I have really light skin so i never want to overdue my make up. I also have lots of freckles that I love and don't want to cover up. Usually I just use a mineral foundation all over my face, and use a bit of concealer under my eyes, and on problem areas. When my acne acts up I use a Clinique liquid foundation, and the mineral foundation. I've found though, that the less liquid foundation I wear the less my skin breaks out!

Thanks Blair! I have been looking for something that will cover up my blemishes. Since I am a teen, I have recently started to break out because I wasn't washing my face as often. Now that you wrote this, I think I might have to go to Sephora and find myself a good cleanser and foundation!

What I do, is well obviously start with a clean face. Then I use Lancome's Sensation Totale, OR Eucerin Everyday Protection face lotion with SPF 30. Then I apply Dream Mousse Concealer, OR Elf's tone correcting concealer. After that I use Rimmel London's Stay Matte + Skinpure Complex in 100 Ivory. I want to get Revlon Colorstay foundation though, but idk what my shade is (do you know any method of choosing the correct shade in foundation?) Then I use either Alex Vogel translucent powder in Mirage, OR Jane staying powder in 3 Medium, OR Maja pressed powder.

Please tell me what you think of it, and answer my question if you can! :)

I love base makeup posts!^0^ I have heard a lot of good things about the Laura Mercier Silk cream foundation. I wonder if it still works if I have dry skin??

What shade do you use for the bobbi brown concealer? Also, do you use a brush with any of those concealers or do you just apply with your fingers? Is the NARS powder foundation as glittery as it looks online? Sorry for all the questions, but I really wanna check some of these products out!

After I washed and moisturiez my face, I use half a pump of my Lancome teint Idole ultra foundation with a flat top kabuki brush by stippling and blending mainly on my cheeks since those are where my troubled spots are, and a bit on my forehead. Then, I use Maybelline's dream mousse concealer on my spots, and I finish off with Lancome's Ageless Minerale translucent powder or foundation when I want a bit more coverage. I don't like to have a lot of foundation, but this is the perfect routine for me since it covers up my acne and post acne scars while looking natural! :)

Blair! Ive actually been wondering if setting my foundation with a powder foundation is a good thing or not?! I have scars and need full coverage, and have noticed that setting with a mineral powder foundation from AVON gives me even fuller coverage! And it makes it easy to even out my skin tone because i can bronze my skin, or lighten it with jsut different shades of powders.. (not drastically differnr, lol.. jsut slightly different shades) great idea =] and i love how even my skin looks afterwards.. it not cakey at all, either. =]

Blair you are awesome just to start haha and I love that opi nail varnish reminds of selenas in her new video. For my foundation routine I use a simple moisturiser to start then go all over my face with maybelines (forgot the name) liquid foundation, add benefits youre bluffing under my eyes and then set with maybeline minareal powder foundation, then I finish off my make-up and set with urban decays all nighter spray. I was thinking of switching it up though, what do you think of mac foundations? Love lily xx sorry this is like an awkward comment im typing from my phone!

Ooo I'm going to try this out! I've used a powder foundation on it's own before and was amazed at it's covereage, so I guess using it with a bit of the right liquid foundation will create wonders! I'll be trying out the products one by one though, because it seems a bit pricey for a students purse lol! BTW the person that recommended the NARS powder Gabe, did he work for NARS or does he recommend it out of his own experience? I'm not trying to imply that he's lying or anything because I know NARS has a good reputation, so I hope you don't see it the wrong way :)

First I use the clinique shine control lotion all over my face. After that dries, I use a SS187 brush (I think its a 187, well pretty much the same brush you usez) for my foundation, which is the Clinique acne solution. i love the coverage and as far as the acne solution part, it doesnt work that well. Even though i've been using it for like a year! after that is all on, i use my merle norman power foundation. I trusted you and went for the powder foundation and it doesnt look cake-y! then i just do my blush, no bronzer most of the time, and whatever eyemakeup i want!

That's what she said...

Good tips:)!

hey blair! i watch all of your videos and im a huge fan. I have a tip for you though... I am a huge fan of Bobbi Brown, I read her books and I recently went to her studio in New Jersey to take a makeup class. Anyways Bobbi's concealers are for the under eyes ONLY which she says in all her books. The reason for this is because her concealers lighten so this means all your imperfections are being highlighted as well! If you need to cover up blemishes or problem areas, try the touch up stick or the foundation stick which offer more coverage.

Thank you so much for your makeup tips... you've really taught me alot!!

Thanks for the post Blair! I had been hoping you would an updated foundation routine. I can definitely use some of these tips in my routine.

Oh something I bought from target a while back which might interest you was a concealer with specifically made for blemishes. It even has 0.5% salicylic acid in it. I have been using it for a while and it really does help out a lot. It's made by Revlon in there ColorStay collection.

This is really helpful! But can I make a request?

I have breakouts, red areas, terrible undereye puffiness and dark circles, and other issues that require a good cover-up routine. However, one, I live in Florida and it can get really hot here, even in winter. Two, I have to wake up really early and I don't have much time in the morning to spend on makeup before school.

Do you think you could find a routine for those of us who need to keep it at a minimal, but with as much coverage as possible? That would be the best! :D

Love ya Blair! <3

Thanks for posting Blair! Can't wait to follow your blog. :)

My bus comes at 6:20 every morning and i love my sleep so I don't have much time for my makeup!
But I like to use my:
maybelline dream mousse concealer. I take a wet concealer brush and sweep it under my eyes then blend. then i take my finger and apply it to any blemishes.
MAC msf natural,
doubles as my setting powder and foundation.
Bronzer. (SOMETIMES!)
when i have extra time, i LOVE my bronzer! I use nars lagoona, which you got me hooked on! haha!
Blush:
my fave, mac melba.

And thats all for face! It takes literally one minute! XD

Hey Blair.. I'm 22 years old and I have been watching your videos as well as your sisters' videos for the past 2 months.. I have always been interested in beauty and fashion but never really did much about it but your videos have inspired me to do something about it and start trying new things!... I love this post because I struggled a lot trying to find a perfect foundation routine... I have similar skin to yours and I want to thank you for sharing your knowledge with me... I recently tried Dior 'Diorskin' Airflash Spray Makeup, and I must say it is amazing! I wanted to share my finding with you because you have shared so much with me. It is kind of pricey ($60 at Nordstrom) but its definitely worth the cost.. it gives you that beautiful airbrush look, perfectly flawless, you may want to try it out especially for special occasions...I recently used for a formal night party I had over the weekend... I applied it on my face by spraying it on a Mac 182 brush and brushed over my entire face... to hide problem areas i sprayed some on my palm and dabbed it on the areas that needed some extra concealing.. it worked wonderfully on my skin and lasted all night, with touch ups!... It didn't cause my face to break out and made me look beautiful all throughout the night. I hope you can try this product and enjoy it as much as I did, and I hope this helped you as much as your posts have helped me. Thanks for all your help!

For my everyday foundation routine this is what I use:

I use a little bit of Smashbox primer all over my face.

I apply Makeup Forever HD Foundation with a Mac 131 stipple brush.

I then use Covergirl concealer for my under eyes, eye lids, and problem areas.

I set everything with Mac's Mineralized Skinfinish Natural using a Mac powder brush.

Then I use Mac's cream blush in Ladyblush on my cheekbones!

*But I really want to try out some of the products you mentioned because your makeup always looks awesome!

hey blair, i actually have been trying to ask you about this. see, i have combination skin, and i get acne, but not a ton, so i was wondering if u knew any medium coverage foundations and great concealers for girls on the go. I tried the revlon colorstay, but it was a little too full coverage for me. if you have any advice on face makeup, then please respond at my youtube buddypuppylover thx.

Blair I have a question! Could you possibly do a tutorial on how to tell what your undertones are? It's really difficult for me to find a good match for my skintone because the better brands ask what your undertones are.

Anonymous said...

On a clean face, I apply Global Goddess Primer all over. Then I either use Laura Mercier's Oil-Free Tinted Moisturzer-which is practically a foundation-or Makeup Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation if I need more coverage. I have clear skin now, but I still have a little bit of scars cause from acne so I use Laura Mercier's Secret Camouflage Concealer on that. I like a dewy look so I apply Makeup For Ever translucent powder just on my t-zone where I'm oily at.After that, I finish with either Guerlain Terracotta Bronzer or Nars Blush in Dolce Vita on my cheeks, a neutral color shadow, mascara, eyeliner, and a lipgloss or sheer lipstick!:)

Love your blog!!

After I've put on some moisturizer, I apply a small amount of Diorskin Nude all over my face - great foundation for skin that always needs some extra moisture. Afterwards I conceal my undereye circles and any blemishes with YSL's Touche Éclat. Also has an highlighting effect, which I love. Then I set my Make Up using Dior's Matte Sunshine Compact Powder. I'd love to try some Laura Mercier products but there's no store in my area. The NARS foundation sounds great as well, but again, not sold where I live...

Q?

When Gabe told you to set your foundation with the NARS powder foundation, did he mean to do this with the Laura Mercier foundation you use or with any foundation?

MAC Cosmetics. What a great article, I read all of it then i am satisfied to say that It’s a terse idiom, and if you’re concerned about the performance you must not have a database or anything else that consumes resources orders of magnitude greater. Consider yourself lucky, otherwise don’t optimize at this level unless you really need to. Keep blogging.

All bobbi brown face products are amazing! at some point in time, you should try their foundation! Ik that their face products are specially designed to cover up skin blemishes and stuff! lol! also, i have always thought you are supermodel gorgeous, and that your skin is perfect! no joke!

Easy way to cover under eye circles well: put your fave concealer under ur eye then set it with a shimmery powder (like a gold shimmery eye shadow or any shimmery shadow that matches ur skintone) and poof GONE! (Use a lil bit (like barely any) more concealer then u would tho.

My bus comes at like 6:30 and I wake up at 5 to get ready so my routine is usually something like:
1. take a shower to cleanse my skin
2. apply some crappy anti-acne pads to help me not break out
3. take tube concealer and cover up trouble spots (usually acne)
4. use clean makeup liquid foundation (shade 115, but I've used 120 before) and apply it with my middle and index fingers all over my face and rub it in
5. Take a fluffy brush and smooth it out and make sure its all covered
6. wipe off the same brush and use some Jane loose powder and apply it all over to set the foundation
7. wipe off the same brush AGAIN (lol) and use some Jane blush on the apples of my cheeks and fade it out to contour

that's pretty much it. It takes like 10 minutes usually and comes out pretty good but after watching you and all the other gurus I'm thinking I should probably use a primer and maybe try that foundation powder instead of normal powder...

Hi, Blair!
Really like your blog. :)
So here is something that has really changed my face and helped with breakouts - tea tree oil. It's AMAZING! You put it on your spots before bed (at least that's what i do, cause it has a strong scent) and in the morning you'll notice a change. I suggested it to my boyfriend, and he loves it too, lol :) So if you try it, let me now how you feel about it. :)

Don't you wear sunscreen blair? You're in LA now, the sun is not kind.

what i do is, after washing my face and moisturizing, i prime my face with prime objective primer, then i put on clinique red solutions foundation, and conceal under my eyes with urban decay 24/7 (i use to also conceal my minor rosacia, but my foundation covers all of it) next i set it with mac select sheer loose powder with my 129 brush (im hoping to get the kabuki soon) and then i contour the "3 E" with nars laguna bronzer and use gold deposit mineralized skin finish and nars orgasm blush with my 129 brush. and thats it! i really want to get the laura mercier one but clinique is already too expensive for me, but i cant stop myself from getting it, but laura mercier is another $10.

hey, utube + blog are both really helpful..

i have a Q about the daily routine..i do it every other day bcoz i like to feel lightweight sometimes, but when i do it now-a-days it doesn't turn out how it used to a few months back! maybe bcoz of the cold as its winter here but im not sure, i've checked different ways on applying a daily base (and they're roughly the same) but my concealing step goes down the drain :\

this is how i do it:
i ensure that before every and any makeup application i get my face ready by using a rose water ice cube and rubbing it gently all over my face. then let it dry naturally, or just dab it dry if im in a hurry..then sometimes i apply face cream to moisturize, apply concealer, then foundation, then set it with face powder, followed by other makeup..

Face Powder: Feather Finish Refill #01
Foundation: Max Factor Int'l Lasting Performance #100
Foundation: Silver Moon Whitening Shine Refinisher Foundation #3
Concealer: Chanel
new Concealer: Makeup Forever 5 Camouflage Cream Palette

i was doing fine without the concealers as i would only use it when i had any blemishes to hide, the face powder did fine at first, then i upgraded to foundation..which also did just fine when i set it with the powder..
i recently purchased the Makeup Forever Palette bcoz i wanted more defining clarity in my everyday look without it being cakey or mucky..but it doesn't seem to be working bcoz im sure im not applying it right..i re-checked the makeup base tutorials but i was doing it right, its very difficult to achieve a proper concealing effect around the eyes (specially bcoz i have dark circles too), plus my blemishes aren't being hidden either, can u help me out?
thanx in advance!

Hey! My foundation routine is as follows:
First I use the Clinique 3 Step System to cleanse my face. For a primer I either use the sally hansen one or Monistat chaffing gel or mac prep and prime. Then I use Eve Pearl Salmon concealer under the eyes. After that, I use Revlon Colorstay foundation Mainly on my problem areas, I blend it out so it I don't have to put the foundation towards the sides of my face. Next, I use Cargo Onebase as a concealer an apply it lightly under my eyes and on any other problem spots. I then use the Body Shop tinted glow enhancer on the high points of my cheeks and I use the Body Shop Cheek and Lip Stain on my cheeks (and lips) After that. I lightly dust MAC mineralized Skin Finish Natural all over my face...
