stop and smell the roses

many of you know that i signed my baby yorkie, teddy bear, up for obedience school classes at my local petsmart. his first class was on a thursday and he learned to respond to "clicker training" and to sit. i was amazed at how quickly he picked it up! he was a natural. well, his second class we were going to work on "come." the trainer explained that we needed to put a leash on him, and that would help us teach him. i let her know that i didn't have a leash, but she said not to worry, she had one and a collar little enough for him. (btw, i know i'm an awful mother for not keeping a collar on him, he just hates the feel of them, and cries whenever i try to put it on him. it's not like he's ever out of my sight or anything....) so anywhos, we loop the collar around his teeny neck and strap the leash on, she gives me the other end of the leash and told me to walk him. well...... it occurred to me.. that i have never walked him on a leash before! i didn't know it was something you had to TEACH a dog to do. i was under the impression that you strap it on them and they walk with you. this, however, is not the case.

after the trainer/teacher learned that he was a very stubborn dog, and did, in fact, think he was the boss of me, she said we weren't going to work on come. we were going to train him to walk on a leash.

i thought this would be a simple task. it was not. he refused to actually walk and instead attempted to lie down with his four legs sprouting out from his body and he seemed to really enjoy being pulled across the slick floor. i thought this would hurt him, but the trainer assured me that as long as i don't jerk on the leash, and i keep a steady pace, he would be fine. he can either choose to walk, or be dragged along. so there i am, in the middle of petsmart, dragging my dog along the tile. he finally realized that walking with me was the better option.
my homework for the week was to take him on a walk in an unfamiliar place, a.k.a not my back yard, and walk him.

that was 2 weeks ago (i had to skip one week of classes for LA, then the next for my birthday.) i have taken him on a walk every day that i have been in town and i must say, he's getting pretty good at it. that is, until today.

this morning was just like any other morning. i woke up, took a shower, ate some breakfast, blow dried my hair, and decided it was time for teddy's daily walk. i decided today we would walk around the block and that would be enough. well, that was more than enough. first off, today he decided that he was scared, and he was very skittish of anything that moved, i.e. cars, people, birds, and leaves. i could tell he was getting tired and hot by the way he was panting, but i kept reminding him that there was a BIG bowl of ice cold water waiting for him at home. this seemed to keep him moving. until he decided to stop at the neighbors yard, and smell the roses. i am not kidding you. we spent 5 minutes letting him sniff each and every rose before he was content. or so i thought. he then proceeded to lie down on the bed of roses... and SLEEP! yes, sleep! closed eyes, heavy breathing. i mean, come on, i know he's got short legs... but it was 1 block. 1! i carried him the rest of the 5 steps home and gave him his bowl of water. he lapped it up like he had never been given a sip of the liquid gold in his life. i carried him to my room and plopped him on the bed, where he immediately went to sleep.

i would tell myself that a whole block is too much for his little legs to walk, except for the fact that he's walked it at least 7 other times with no problem, running even!

anyways, i decided that i would share this fun little blurp with y'all. maybe one day he will be strong enough to walk 2 whole blocks, but i highly doubt it. do you all have any fun doggie stories?! does your dog like smelling the roses? let me know in the comments. and i'll write to y'all later.

xoxo,
blair

With my dog is sort of the same story, and at the same time it's the opposite.

She is an English Cocker Spaniel, and the first times we took her out to walk it was so hard because she just couldn't concentrate!! She was amazed at everything she saw, smelled everything and went in all directions!

We never took her to obedience school though, she does a fantastic job at doing what my mom tells her to do but fails terribly when my sister or I try to do it.

She doesn't smell roses but loves smelling shoes!! I mean, every single time someone in my house decides to wear a new pair she goes directly to smell them. I believe she thinks we need her approval before stepping out of the house with them! LOL (:

when i first got my dog lilly she knew how to fetch on her own. she was only 8 weeks old and when i threw the ball she retrieved it! she was a natural.

lilly loves walks, but she's very picky on where we go. she always walks on the sidewalk she refuses to walk on the grass its awkward haha.

a few months ago i got out of the shower and was blow drying my hair when i was missing my brush. i searched everywhere for it. then i saw lilly had gotten it and dragged it all the way across the house. i get she does like to fetch! :)

My dog, Sam, is kind of like that. I walk her two miles as often as possible, usually during the afternoon. Last summer, it was hot and I took for a three mile walk to build up her stamina. Unfortunately, she got so tired, she laid in a neighbor's yard and gave me the most testing look ever! She (a beagle and lab mix) refused to be pulled or moved an inch. Dogs can be stubborn, like cats. :) xx

I have a pug, every time I take him for a walk,(we run 10 blocks) he is pooped for the rest of the night! He has never had enough energy to keep playing after we come home from our nap. I know it really isn't a funny story, but I think it is a cute one!

That's a funny story! :D Puppies can be so silly. My dog Pudgy is really stubborn too, but she is really big! We took her to obedience training classes and she did really well...until she stepped foot outside of the doors. Then she was a maniac! The trainers didn't believe us that she was so bad because she was pretending to be a good dog, lol. It got so bad that we had to try to give her away but she bit the baby of the family we were trying to give her too so we had to take her back. She has calmed down a bit now that she is older but she barks at everything and gangs up on our other dog. But I love her! :P

The poor doggie is probably starting coming down with the flu or had a nightmare about dachshunds the night before.

And really when is stopping to smell the roses ever a bad idea?

P.S it's amazing how you write exactly how you speak, minus a few anyways.

Awwww Teddy! That's so funny Blair!

My doggie is getting old and she is the SLOWEST walker ever. She'll randomly decide she wants to walk at a snails pace, then run, then back to a snail's pace again... in the span of like 2 minutes! haha she's so weird. I love her though! I posted a picture of her on my most recent blog post, you should go see! She's a golden retriever :)

LOL that is too cute! My parent's Scottish terrier just has to smell every flower she walks near (even those daisy/weed things in the grass). My beagle just likes go run, but he likes to choose which way we go... Grr! He also lies down, sulks and refuses to walk if he doesn't like the harness/collar we use that day (he has a couple of different types). <3 to both you and Teddy!

Aw cute story!!

One time we thought my was lost and we spent hours looking for him. We made signs and everything. I was so sad and worried about him. We then came home and heard a mysterious noise. My brother opened his bathroom door only to find the dog come running out. My brother had accidently shut him up in there!!

My dog, George, would do that when i took him up to the Canyon for walks. He would find some flowers, sniff and decide it was nap time! To be alpha, you have to be in control of the dog and not let him sniff until you say it is ok. Sounds mean but dogs live in the moment and don't hold grudges :)

i thought tha too and my yorkie(bella shes three months old) just learned how to walk on sunday:) but we went a little farther than a block but i carried her for most of it too:)

My dog is a Yorkie mix named Abigail. About a month ago she decided to somehow slip through the fence because she is so small. I realized she was missing so I went to investigate. Sure enough, she had dug a hole under the fence! I started running all around my neighborhood, and got really worried that she had ventured onto the busy road. Then, when I was running down the street, a lady said " are you looking for a dog? Small, black" I said yes, and she said she was down at the park! Sure enough, she had run down to the park and was sleeping in the grass. This happened once more untill we fixed the fence, and I knew exactly were to find her! She loves that park!

That's funny you had to teach your dog to walk, because my 110 pound boxer-lab-great dane mix dog, Sid, always just walked with us. But then again, at a 110 pounds...there is really only so many things he can do before he has no choice than to walk ;]

I love your videos and your blog posts, you're such an inspiration to me! And Teddy is stinking adorable too!

well.. you are suppose to walk your dog everyday, morning and night. for his size you should walk him about 20 mins each time. he is just not use to it yet i guess. thats why he gets tired so easily. after you start walk him everyday more and more, he will be a strong boy. live longer ;)

Cute story! I would have loved to see him in the bed of roses!

One thing I wanted to point out was the ice cold water bit. Cool or warm water would be better for him because if the water is too cold it can cause stomach issues, especially after exercise when the body is hot. It's the same with any other animal really.

Just thought I'd share that with you. :)

Oh teddy!!! Blair My dog Did nearly the same thing is a golden, and eight and i understand that dogs that age get tired but we were only crossing the road!!!! We started to cross the road we were in the middle and she stoped...!! I FREAKED out big time , what was going to happen was a car coming.. As a owner yourself you know that you would hate your dog to get hit by a car. She sat herself down and panted.. Luckly I had some treats so i bribed her to cross the road from there we walked our walk.

Thanks for the story!!

haha, puppies seem to be like that. I've never had a dog of my own but have dogsat for my boss' dog (a lab) and my cousin's dog (a dachshund mutt) and both LOVE to smell (and try to eat) EVERYTHING, which makes walks take twice as long. I think it's just b/c dogs have such a sensitive nose...everything smells so interesting to them. lol I hear it gets better as the dog gets older though.

During Easter, my dog named Mooshu (he is a Italian Greyhound/Scottie mix) was outside with us in our front yard. Well, he heard the ice cream truck come by and he walked up to it when the children were getting theirs. He sat there waiting like he was going to be asked what he wanted! It was one of the cutest things ever! He waited so patiently but didn't get anything.

I got a new puppy last week on April 2nd! A little golden retriever, Baxter <3

He's only about 9 weeks old and we have been working on potty training him :) I didn't know you had to leash train puppies either! We're going to be working on it soon.

Smelling the roses.. lol!!! That really cracked me up. I've never heard of anything like that. I suppose I'll see if Baxter likes roses too here in a few weeks! I'll let you know! hahaha <33

I know that this is not a funny story, but it is a story about my dog. I have (well, had) 5 dogs (one passed away about 3 months ago). So now, 4 dogs. Anyway two of them are Boston Terriers: Rodger and Oscar. One day the Boston Terriers were "play fighting" and Oscar hit Rodger VERY HARD in the back of his head. Hard enough to knock his eye out of his head! Rodger had to go to the Animal Hospital and they made him all better, except for the fact that he now has only one eye! So, my dog Rodger is a one-eyed dog! But he is cuter than ever now and even more playful! I was so happy that he was alive and okay! I love my dog so much, and i see you love Teddy too! Be careful when he is around other dogs! I learned that the hard way! Now my dogs have to sleep in separate cages and we watch them closely. Rodger is okay and so are the other 3 dogs! :)

I have a dog. He loves walks. We go on 1-2 hour walks every day. I see tons of little dogs go for long walks like this. If you keep working with Teddy for a while he will start to really enjoy his walks. Maybe if you bring treats or something he likes on his walks he will find them more enjoyable. Just keep at it and be consistent.

my dog is afraid of EVERYTHING. and he's not even a small dog! he's afraid of my bedroom because my floors are laminate and he doesn't like going from the hard wood to the laminate; he's afraid to go from my back porch to the patio because he doesn't like the threshold. He's so strange. He doesn't like walking on unfamiliar surfaces. He doesn't bark, either! if somebody comes to the door, he'll just stand there and wait for them to come in, just wagging his tail. unless it's somebody really big and unfamiliar, then he might let out a little "oof. oof. oof." but you can barely hear him! he's such a cutie! :)

My dog is the complete opposite. He could walk for miles, and not be tired. I remember once he ran into a busy street (he escaped from our backyard since the gate was open) and a when car hit him, he showed no sign of pain! He was even bleeding! We took him to the vet, and he was in pretty bad shape, but he didn't seem at all in pain.
Anyways, back on topic, does Teddy know how to fetch? My dog is helpless when it comes to fetch. He takes the toy and just runs off. :/

lol that's like my little chihuahua. He has to stop and smell every flower, & every blade of grass! & he is knew to the whole walking thing as well so he gets really tired out. & since he is a small dog I didn't realize I had to pick him up to cross the bridge near my house. lol his little paws just kept falling through. But he's getting better, minus the bridge part. (we don't walk that way anymore) So good luck with teddy!

My dog is fine to walk, but I also walk my cousins' dog. Their dog is a giant, really fat yellow lab. This yellow lab is also about 6, and not very energetic. He would much rather me sitting at home eating food. Well, he gets fed at 4:00 pm, so I decided to take him on a walk at noon. Unfortunately, he decided that was too close to his feeding time, so he wouldn't walk. I had to drag him down the street and lure him out with dog food to get him to move. Then, in the middle of the street, he just laid down. He weighs about 150 lbs, because he eats all of the food on the counters when you're not looking, and I couldn't even move him. We finally got to the forest preserve that was literally one block away after half an hour of trying to get him there. Once he was in the forest, he was totally fine, and seemed like he was pleasantly surprised that I was walking him. That's what I had been trying to do for the past half hour! Anyway, it was a long day.

I recently got a new 1 year old min-pin/fox terrier puppy from the shelter. He is extremely hyper, especially if he gets wet. One day I took him for a walk and it started to rain. We were about 1 block from my house & once we were home we were both relieved. But my puppy, Russell, jumped on the couch and started rolling around. He was kicking off pillows and going nuts just to dry off, it was the craziest thing, and he still does it, especially after a bath.

Anonymous said...

I have a 3 legged long haired Chihuahua named Roseanna Fawntana Montana :) We just call her Rosie or Rosarita! Lol! She actually had her right leg amputated after she jumped off the couch as a puppy. She's fine tho, no worries! Funny story? My dog has a trick she does where I can say "let's dance Rosie!" and she'll spin I'm circles chasing her tail.. Soo one day she again was "spinning" and she actually caught her tail, and like Teddy, Rosie is super tiny, and she caught her tail and bit it and started growling thinking that *I* did something! Haha! She was soo shocked that it was her tail! So she like kept spinning cuz she hadda figure out what was going on! Haha! :)

Hey Blair!
My puppy is 5 months old, and he is a jack russell/beagle/collie or husky mix. He is a mystery mutt :) Well, I just got back from walking him and he does something very weird whenever we walk. If he sees a blond woman, he acts like they have been best friends forever and chases them (or tries to). He strains his little body so hard against the leash that his ears fold backwards against his head in an adorable way, and refuses to give up until the girl disappears. As soon as she is gone, he is devastated and tries to climb up my coat. Once, he saw a blond poodle and it was like love at first sight! Sadly, she wouldn't even look at him.
He has also chewed through 4 leashes already :P
Teddy is adorable and don't worry, my vet says all these puppy shananigans will calm down as he gets older.

My labrador, Boston, is really good inside, sits, lies down, shakes your hand, jumps through hoops but if you take him outside he just runs! He's too friendly and wants to go everywhere, whereas my jack russel, Jack (original I know!) is quite skittish, he's scared of the hoop and other things like leaves and plastic bags, but he's good inside and outside the house. HOWEVER, my dachshund is about 16 years old and I think she's partly blind and a bit deaf, she's also very stubborn so all she does is lie in her bed! You've got to love dogs!

Hey Blair,
I absolutely LOVE your blog and youtube videos. I said this to your sister also because I love both of you lol. So I decided I really want to be more girly and put up a blog about it. I really really need help because I have with pretty much all guys, and I don't really wear makeup or anything... so that's my blog this week. I want some suggestions for makeup and then I'll try everything out! Do you think you could go check it out? (http://glamifyme.blogspot.com/)

Hey Blair,
I've been following you on youtube (both channels) and twitter for a while now, and I was just curious if I missed something. Did you already announce the winner of the Shoes of Prey give-away? The contest has been over for quite awhile now and I have yet to see who won. Did I miss where you announced it or are we all still waiting? Let me know!

So cute, maybe it's spring and Teddy is in romantic mood :)?
My dog wont't fetch. If You throw him something, he just looks at You with the impression "You threw it away. You don't need it, so why should I bother?".
I'm more a cat person but he's just too cute not to love him.

One time my dog lu-lu was staying at a kennel well I was gone for thanksgiving and the owner of the kennel couldn't get her to come inside!! They had to use their thanksgiving potroast to get her in. She ended up eating it and she was banned from the kennel.

omg my dog LOVES to smell the roses! it makes our walks so much longer then they need to be! haha

I don't have a dog...but I do have some unusual cats that like to go on walks with me too! I live near a golf course so I occasionaly decide to talk a stroll down there. After about five minutes I will always hear a bell jingle and see my cat leaping through the grass running after me. We walk side by side or sometimes I'll carry her around my neck (lol) or in my arms.

Your dogs are so cute by the way!

our dog is a small whippet called charlie, she is eight now and she is really cute =)
i'm not at home that much, so i only walk her sometimes at the week ends and we don't have blocks here, only a few houses and lots of fields. but i'm lazy and only go around one or two.
anyway she is really scared of any other dog, even if it's half her size. the big exception: rottweilers. they're twice her size, but she'll play with them. but only with them.
teddy is really cute :)

Hey Blair !
I don't have a dog, but I did have a cat. It was hilarious when we would take him for a walk(yes we would take him for a walk sometimes) and whenever we would walk by flowers, he would just sit there. idk if he were smelling them or what. but he loved to sit down, near flowers :D

what do you do with Teddy when you're busy showering, doing your hair, etc? my puppy doesn't let me do anything and I don't want to put him in his crate because he stays in his crate all night :( I can't let him roam free because he'll eat bad stuff or get hurt or my cat will get him. any puppy advice?

Now, I'm no professional, but it shouldn't be a problem for him to walk 1 block, or 2, or more even. He sounds a little spoiled. You didn't have to carry him back home. Just make him walk, it's only 1 block, like you said. The best way to get him used to it is to do it. It's a training process, for both of you. You're trying to train him to walk on a leash and behave better (I am assuming) so you have to be consistant ALWAYS! If you show him you'll pick him up and carry him home every time he does that, he won't change and will keep doing that. Ask the trainer for advice with that one, because she really KNOWS what she's doing and I haven't had any schooling, just experience with dogs of my own. But any trainer will tell you to be consistant, I can guarantee it.

Good luck with the training!

Do you think chiwawas are better or yorkies?

Sarah said...

My dog, Gizmo, is funny about walks. He gets over excited and sometimes hyperventilates or something. So I have to calm him down for like 5 minutes before each walk, and sometimes during the walk if he gets too excited again.

Anyway, one time I was walking him when it snowed one winter. Our streets were like solid ice, and he was pulling me like a sled dog! He almost made me fall a couple times! He's a little dog too, part chihuahua part rat terrier. I thought it was funny. He's a little ball of energy.

We also just got him this stuffed hedgehog toy, and I've never seen him be more excited about a toy haha. He chases it all over the house.

Good luck with the rest of your classes, sounds like Teddy has a big personality. :)

Thats funny my yorkie does the same thing when i put him on leash he just doesnt understand what its all about and lays down like he is sad. he gives me a look like mom what are you doing? probably bc i never keep him on a leash either iver just tried to get him to go on a walk a few times but he was not having it... and actually your not bad at all bc yorkies are such small dogs collars can actually collapse their throat because they are just really tiny

Hey Blair! Haha Teddy's such a sweetie :) I have a dog, he's a collie called Murphy, and whenever I'm playing with him outside, he loves to pick up huge sticks with his mouth, then chase me around the house and whacks me around the legs with the stick- I literally have to RUN from him, lol!

My beautiful puppy Oscar (Baby Labrador, 2 and a half months) has been proving that he's pretty smart.. the first 2 weeks he was here, he learned to sit and "hand shake" if asked... the "only peeing in the right place" one is kinda tricky for him though... last week he was very proudly showing me he could do it. (the peeing place is a kind of box with old newspaper). so, he steps into the box, gets all inside, looks at me and starts peeing... with his little "peeing body part" outside of the box!! AHAHAAH!!! sooo cute!

I have a Pomeranian named Trixie and she hates wearing a collar too. I may suggest you put teddy in a harness, it a lot more comfortable and it safer. If a tiny dog jerks or you pull to hard on the leash the dogs trakia can collapse. Keep up the good work and be consistent

One night, my family and I, went to dinner at a nice dine in. We came home to find our pitbull, Harley sitting at the front door. First thing my dad said was, "Oh Crap". So, after we get him inside and settled, we went out into the back yard to see how he got out... well, he somehow bit through the fence and it's a regular wire fence!! We have no clue how it happened. His mouth was all cut up. But he was a good dog for waiting at the front door :)

Teddy is so cute. My little yorkie wouldn't even leave my driveway when I tried to take her on a walk! She just sat there and I was afraid if I tugged on the leash, it'd hurt her, so I just gave up :) I wish our dogs could have a meet up, haha that'd be cute.
